Akira is the son of the most famous go players of Japan: Toya Mejin. He have the same age as the hero Hikaru, play go too and since their first meeting in the 21 volume of the manga until the end, he gonna be a motor, a challenger for the young Shindo.

Since the age of two, Akira spend the most of his time in learning go, following his father's lessons who, that the cake!, is the best go players of Japan and maybe of the world.
He seems to leave just for that and he is also a good student at school (because he had incorporate a prestigious college private apparently rather selective). Is that he is very serious for his age! Began professional he decided to learn Chinese and Korean…
Bring up in a family rather traditional (the Toya's house is absolutely unlike those of the Shindo's house, it is typically Japanese), he always appears obedient and he never stultify like Shindo is sometimes. He knows how to behave well and he've got the style, him!
Even if he doesn't say, his father is always proud of his sonny always shining and very polite and Akira make all to not disappoint his father, released to wear clothes absolutely ridiculous ( who must be f the age of his father childhood , we are maybe a little stingy for the Toya…) that make him seems like an old school boy-scoot.
Before he try to become professional teen-aged (even if he could have been successful in the test before he have try one's luck ), he is a sort of legend in the go world even he had never play in a tournament for juniors, his father thinking that Akira's level daunt the others.

Fascinated by Hikaru.

But one fine day, Hikaru make irruption in the go salon where Akira hang out the most part of his time for show off around adults lousy at go who slaughter them when he want and they venerate him like a demigod and who never stop to ask him a game ( fruitcake this guys). And yet , the young boy with discoloured lock ( a such hairdo, it have certainly shock Akira but we have said, he is well bring up so he didn't let seem that ) demolished him ! From that , Akira is repulsed and doubt about him ( especially after a second shutout ). He had never meet a challenger of his own age and then he had just one target: flail Hikaru. But this one doesn't want to play more with him, Akira , who get about his defeat rather quickly and resume to banter in slaughtering so easily the others students of the high school club's, begin to pursue him, showing oneself kinda agreeable with Hikaru. But since he demolishes him at the school tournament, he start to despise him, ignore him and talk to him like with a scapegrace.

Nevertheless, even if he says that he is not more interested by Shindo, he cannot forget him and doesn't stop to keep a watch on him and his growth, having fear and desire too that he overtake him. Everybody tell it, he need a challenger to reaching high again. If Akira can seem selfish sometimes, thinking only about himself and his growth, only Hikaru can be able to touch him and to make him worry about another person that himself. And in spite of their tense relationship full of clash, they come back inevitably one to the other. Akira can show oneself very gentle sometimes (and notably with the girls and the children).

The next great players.

After he became professionals, Akira Toya lives an exemplary spread. He had victory in series and everybody start to think that he will become stronger than his father was. He will be without doubt, the great player of tomorrow.
Just after some years in the professional world he also braves the Ichiryu, Zama and Ogata with witch he competes…
Then he tries to be recognize, be emancipated in relation to his father, in considering to left the house.

Clever, Akira is the one who come close the truth concerning Sai and Hikaru. Hikaru has promised to reveal him his secret one day but even during the Hokuto Cup burning to ask him, Akira decided to wait.

Bad nature.

Under his sweet boys looks (confirmed by his hair cut a little "has-been" and his look of beaver juniors) always polite and amiable (although it depends with whom…) Akira hides a goddamn nature and a big pride. He hates lose, doesn't hide his aspirations and he isn't hypocritical, even if he is not crowing. Result: everywhere he go, he make him hate and the infrequent persons who persist in and approach him ( Hikaru, Yashiro or Ochi ) are be given a roasting all the times. For Akira, go is not a joke! Akira is always serious. So when he try to be cool, he appear like a unfeeling person, uppity because a lot of person doesn't understand that he is concentrate only in his own goal. And yet he is so cute! Sniff ( T_T ) ! Everybody is unjust with him ! Poor little ! He had no friends !
Another thing on Akira…..? Ah! And uh, he knows how to take the subway all alone like a big boy and he love run on the stairs since he heard the name of Hikaru. Otherwise, we told you ! He exists only for play go !
