It's only in the 13th tome that we discover Akiko, the beautiful mother of Akira (we know already of who he holds his beautiful face!). Even if we see her many times after, she stays a very secondary character but interesting for the story.

The great go Master's wife.

Kind, joyful, very elegant, we guess that she has an easy life in a family rather graceful. Always smiling, she seems to be devoted to her husband and is interested from afar to go (she reads the go weekly) even if the passion of her husband and her son seems to overtop her. She seems to be younger than her husband and more smart than Hikaru's mother.

A mother before everything else.

When she meets Hikaru, she looks at him with affection. She seems to consider him more like the child that he is that like a go player (and again less like a rival for her son).

In the anime and the Japanese manga, she calls her son : Mr Akira (Akira-san).

She also recognize that she doesn't cook very well.

A sympathetic but self-effacing woman.

She is plunged in the go's world in spite of her and we feel that she'll like that her husband take a break sometimes but she stays patient and comprehensive.

She doesn't protest when her husband asks her to not come to the hospital (the day where the game with Sai is provided), she waits at the go's institute when he plays his matchs... Between her son and her husband, this doesn't have to be very funny every day!
