Hikaru No go involves us in a universe with many characters (nearly 200!!!). Each chara have his own personality and way to dress. They are all different but very engaging and from an incredible realism.

Besides succeeding in visually differentiating them the ones from the others, Obata succeed in making this chara grown older throughout the series and without temporal ellipse.

The main characters grow, Akira and Hikaru looks more and more older but the young heroes evolve also mentally. The character who changes the most during the series is without any doubt Hikaru.
The capricious, impolite and stubborn kid of the beginning become little by little a young calmer teenager, mature and able of a great concentration in his games. Even his relations with Akari, his young neighbour, change. Whereas he was rather odious with her at the beginning of the series, he becomes nicer and pleasant towards the end, showing that he grew.

There is only this poor Ogata (horrible at the beginning!) who seems to grow younger lol.

This is an indicative graph of the charas' sizes. Many charas are still child and they grow during the manga. At the end of the story, Hikaru exceeds Akari.
