THE GAME OF GO

The game of Go

The game of go today

If you open your dictionary, you will probably find the following definition :

Go is a strategic, deterministic two-player board game originating in ancient China. The game of Go is played by alternately placing stones on a grid. The two players, black and white, engage to maximize the territory they control, seeking to surround large areas of the board with their stones, to entrap any opposing stones that invade these areas, and to protect their own stones from capture. (Wikipedia)

The game of go is a very old game, become popular again thanks to Hotta and Obata. In Western countries, people discovered this game and started to like it thanks to Hikaru no go.

Indeed, the go is a very aesthetic game, which can also explain its success. In the most prestigious games, the players kneel in front of the go board (seiza position) and a go player had to hold his stones between the index finger and the middle finger (not very easy but so much more elegant than between the thumb and the index finger!)

However, as you can see it on the map, this strategy game is much more popular in the Asian countries than on our countries.

Bases

Even if there aren't many rules in go game and the rules are rather simple, this game remains complex and requires work for those who want to progress.

If you don't want to launch you in the training of the go, you shouldn't be unaware of some elementary tricks all the same.

The go is played on a plate called go-board (a grid with 19 intersections). The players places the stones on these intersections (and not in the delimited boxes).

Players doesn't move the stones (contrary to chess game) on the go-board. Once that a stone was posed, it cannot be moved or removed, except if the stones are captured by the opponent (or at the time of the points counting at the end)
